Does your electrical panel need an upgrade for an EV charger?

Start with an electrical assessment

A qualified electrician can determine whether the home has enough electrical capacity for the proposed charger. Charging equipment and its installation must comply with the applicable codes and manufacturer instructions.

• Provide the vehicle and charger model, if selected.
• Describe your normal driving needs and how long the vehicle is parked at home.
• Mention planned electrical additions, such as another EV, a pool, or major appliances.
• Ask the contractor to explain both the capacity assessment and the proposed equipment location.

An empty breaker position is not the whole answer

Space for a new breaker and capacity to supply a new load are different questions. A photo of an open breaker position cannot establish that a charger can be added safely. Likewise, adding a subpanel does not by itself increase the capacity of the electrical service.

Ask your contractor to distinguish between a panel-space issue, an equipment-condition issue, and an electrical-capacity issue. That explanation should make the recommended scope easier to understand.

Discuss the charging rate and management options

Some charging equipment supports a lower configured charging rate or compatible automatic power management. For example, Tesla describes equipment that adjusts charging based on the power available in the home. These options require compatible components, correct installation, and review for the particular electrical system.

Ask whether a suitable option meets your daily charging needs before assuming the highest available charging rate is necessary. Manufacturer requirements and any installer-program restrictions still apply. Waveform does not claim Tesla Certified Installer status.

If an upgrade is recommended, clarify what it includes

Ask whether the proposal changes only the panel or also involves the meter equipment, service conductors, or utility connection. Confirm who coordinates utility work, permits, inspections, and any interruption of power. A panel replacement and an increase in service capacity are not interchangeable descriptions.
