The charger is only one part of the price. The electrical work needed to connect it safely—and the route between your panel and parking space—can change the project substantially.
Start with the installation scope
Two homeowners can buy the same charger and receive different installation quotes. Compare what each proposal includes before comparing the final number.
- Equipment: the charger, mounting hardware, and any equipment needed for the selected charging arrangement.
- Electrical work: the circuit, wiring, and any necessary panel or service changes.
- Wiring route: distance, access through walls, outdoor conduit, trenching, and obstacles.
- Project completion: applicable plans, permits, inspections, setup, and restoration of disturbed finishes.
Choose a practical parking location
Before asking for an estimate, decide where the vehicle normally parks and where its charge port sits. A convenient charger position should let the cable reach the car without crossing a walkway.
Take an exterior photo of the panel and a wider photo of the parking area. Note the approximate distance between them and any walls, pavement, or landscaped areas along the route. An on-site assessment may still be needed.
Have the electrical capacity checked
A qualified electrician should evaluate the home’s electrical capacity and the proposed charging load. The equipment selection and installation must also meet applicable local requirements. Ask the contractor to explain any recommended upgrade and include it in the written scope.
Ask these questions when comparing quotes
- Am I supplying the charger, or is it included?
- What wiring route and installation location does this price assume?
- Are permit fees, inspection coordination, and any required plans included?
- Who repairs drywall, paint, landscaping, or pavement if the work affects them?
- What happens if the site assessment reveals additional work?
- Will the contractor check operation and explain how to use the installed equipment?
