Describe the work before requesting drawings
For a shop build-out, office renovation, or equipment addition, explain what is existing, what will be removed, and what will be installed. Include any changes already requested by the owner or building department.
Tell us whether you need a new electrical design, revisions to an existing project, or help responding to electrical review comments. If another designer is involved, identify that person and the current status of the documents.
What should a contractor send for a proposal?
Send what you have and identify anything missing. Keep electrical covers in place when taking photos; any internal equipment inspection should be arranged with qualified personnel.
- Property address, suite number, project contact, and target schedule.
- The latest floor plan or architectural background, including its revision date.
- Available electrical drawings, panel schedules, and equipment nameplate information.
- Cut sheets for proposed equipment and a description of how it will be used.
- The complete electrical review comments if the project is already in permitting.
Agree on the drawings and coordination included
Ask which deliverables the proposal covers: for example, power and lighting plans, panel schedules, load calculations, or a riser diagram. The project determines which documents are appropriate.
Clarify whether the fee includes a site visit, coordination with other disciplines, permit-review responses, and construction questions. Owner changes and later equipment substitutions should have an agreed process for revising the scope and schedule.
What does a PE signature and seal mean?
The Florida Board of Professional Engineers explains that signing and sealing an engineering document establishes professional responsibility for its content. The engineer must have the relevant expertise and responsible charge of the work. Existing sketches or drawings therefore need a professional scope review; a signature alone is not the design service.
Confirm the submission format with the building department. Its review and approval are separate from the engineer’s preparation of the documents.
